Our Story
Calm with Character is rooted in the dissertation research conducted at John's Hopkins University by the founder, Dr. Sharmeen Mahmud. After assessing that educators clearly needed a trauma informed social emotional learning resource for themselves and their students, yet limited time was a vital factor, a sustainable program was developed. The initial success of the program prompted a movement to make Calm with Character® available to everyone.
Our Philosophy

We've come a long way since the Psychoanalysis of Carl Jung. However, his words continue to be the root of our work in mental health. Jung saw the need for teacher student connections and warm rapport for the growth of our children into global citizens. Now we have the collective consciousness to bring mental wellness practices into schools, with the teacher taking center stage.
A waxing crescent moon is partially illuminated and growing, while the waning crescent moon is partially lit but in decline. Either way, both look like a smile, as is possible whether you are having a good day or a bad day. We have brought these two phases of the moon together to form a butterfly symbolizing transformation because we believe by practicing calm with character we can transform ourselves.
