Calm with Carachter is an evidence based social emotional learning program that integrates teacher wellness and training to deliver neuroscience based lessons.  A whole classroom approach allows teachers to address the needs of trauma impacted students.  Integration of Mindfulness and Community Circles build teacher student connections and resiliency. The programs can be used virtually or in person.

Neuroscience Based Program For Student Wellness

Calm with Character was developed through extensive research on trauma interventions that have been empirically proven to work.  It is not just another SEL program, it is a curation of evidence based intervention elements that target alleviation of trauma symptoms.

Mindfulness

Calm with Character is rooted in Mindfulness research.  Mindfulness is a practice of focusing on the present moment in an intentional and nonjudgmental manner.

Mindfulness helps develop concentration, memory, and positive brain activity.  Through mindful movement and mindfulness exercises, students learn emotion regulation and resiliency while reducing stress.

Positive Relationships

Strong teacher-student relationships create a sense of safety and improve academic outcomes. Through community circles rooted in restorative justice practices, genuine verbal interaction bolsters collective concern in the classroom. Students perceive their teachers as more respectful, and teachers make fewer referrals for discipline.  The positive interactions transfer to positive experiences for the brain, which improves wellbeing.

Character Development

Feelings of safety and trust include knowledge of expectations.  Including social skills lessons on character helps students achieve this sense of security.  Character development teaches kind communication and builds self-regulation abilities.  Including social emotional lessons and not just mindfulness alone helps to promote pro-social behavior among students and help to comply with school SEL requirements.

The Calm with Character Adult Wellness Program includes mindfulness activities and neuroscience based trauma informed social emotional learning for all school staff. Educator wellness is incorporated into all Calm with Character SEL, however, it is available as an individual program a well.

Why Our

Programs?

Calm with Character is developed to respect teacher time and student attention spans.  Lessons incorporate short videos that are 3 to 5 minutes long and require no preparation. All programs offer ongoing support and classroom modeling of lessons by a dedicated expert. 

2020 Prevention & Intervention Results

  • 100% of teachers used mindfulness and community circles either periodically to at least once or twice per week at the end of the program.

  • Informal lessons in SEL as part of the teachers' regular teaching practices improved from 33.3% to 83.3%.

  • Teacher perception of feasibility of SEL in the classroom improved from 33.3% to 66.6%.

  • Student stress levels and academic outcomes were maintained, preventing deterioration during distance learning and a pandemic.

Calm with Character is available for short term interventions or entire school year prevention program for whole classrooms and their educators.

Caring Child
First Aid

Intensive 10 weeks intervention to prevent deterioration of academics and behavior, as well as reduce stress.  Fits into one trimester and suitable for short-term SEL or after an adverse experience causing collective trauma.

One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.
